Counting the Omer

From Passover to Shavuot: A 49-Day Journey

What is Counting the Omer?

Counting the Omer is a 49-day period (7 weeks) that begins on the second day of Passover (Pesach) and concludes with the festival of Shavuot. It marks the journey from freedom (Exodus from Egypt) to purpose (receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai).

In ancient times, farmers would bring a sheaf (omer) of barley as an offering during this period. Today, Jews count each day with a special blessing to prepare spiritually for Shavuot.
